Worn-Out Wisdom
Why do students and teachers grow weary and exhausted by May?
Ecclesiastics 12:12
"Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books there is no end and much study worries the body."
In the month of May, I begin to hear,
"The children have checked out."
"They are done."
"The kids are unbearable, it must be close to the end of the school year."
We all can find ourselves in a state of self-help, learning study BURNOUT! Even as Christian students found in Bible study groups or small groups found in living rooms.
Have you ever found yourself saying I cannot read another study? My brain can't take in one more thing. The constant chasing after more knowledge and wisdom can leave your body, mind, and soul feeling exhausted. Being in a state of constant gathering wisdom and knowledge can consume the space in between where spiritual peace should be found, grounded, and being still and quiet before your God, looking to him.
We soon find we've stopped reading scripture, and our Bible is only picked up when doing a study or when going to church.
For those of us in the United States, we come to the end of the school year during this season.
Ecclesiastics 12:12 says, "Be warned, my son, of anything in addition to them. Of making many books, there is no end, and much study worries the body."
This verse warns us that a constant chasing after knowledge and wisdom, the constant learning, studying, and training, is exhausting to our bodies and will eventually lead us to feeling spiritually empty, even if what we chase after is for Christian theology and self-help books.
Now you might say, but Lisa, you have written a Bible study book. Yes indeed, I have! However, it is good to direct your attention to your relationship with Jesus Christ and your creator of all things.
It is healthy to find accountability in all your relationships and spending your time with the God who has given you breath and life. To reconnect and find spiritual peace. Redeveloping refreshment and a renewing of mind and spirit. And then return to your studies.
Use this summer to be in the presence of your Savior and Maker with silence. Just BEING, listening for his Spirit to speak. Invite him into your heart and mind. Allow your mind and body to be filled back up by having a relationship with the one who has all the wisdom and knowledge beyond books and studies. FIND him in the spaces of his marvelous creations.
And you will be ready again after your break from study to hear God's word for the beautiful, long-lasting treasure that it is.
And when you are ready this fall, feeling refreshed and renewed, and ready to gather again, consider TRUE REFLECTION for your fall Women's Bible study. www.lisa-stenger.com/book-freebies
